During your adult tour to Gettysburg, you may want to take a tour of some of the well-known churches in the area. Some of the churches served as hospitals during the conflict, some were built as memorials, and others played a role in the daily life of the citizens who lived during that particular time. There are tours offered for the group to explore. History will come alive as you learn about the churches through programs. You can take a Walking Tour of these fascinating historical landmarks. There are various tours to choose. One of them is known as the West Tour. During the experience, the group will make stops to different churches. You will visit places such as the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, St. Paul’s AME Zion Church, and Christ Lutheran Church. At each of the locations, your group will have the opportunity to hear factual presentations that focus on the role that each church played during the Battle of Gettysburg. The tour covers six-tenths of a mile and is 90 minutes in length. Another choice to consider is the East Tour. The group will stop at churches such as the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, Trinity United Church of Christ, The G.A.R. Building (United Methodist Church), and St. James Lutheran Church. You will hear factual presentations at each of the locations which focus on the role these churches played during the battle and in the history of the community. The tour covers one-half mile. The Prince of Peace Church was constructed as a national symbol of reconciliation. Veterans placed a cornerstone on the 25th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. There are more than 130 memorial stones and plaques in the bell tower. St. Paul’s AME Zion Church is the oldest African-American church.
